Exercise Physiology

Exercise is medicine — and when it's prescribed correctly, it changes lives. Our Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) design safe, structured exercise programs for people managing chronic conditions, recovering from injury, or building functional capacity under NDIS. Unlike a personal trainer, an AEP has specialised clinical training and can work with you no matter how complex your health history.

What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise physiology is the study and application of exercise science to prevent and manage chronic disease, injury, disability, and other health conditions. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-trained allied health professionals who design safe, effective exercise programs for people with complex health needs.

Unlike a personal trainer, an accredited exercise physiologist has specialised clinical training to work with individuals with medical conditions, injuries, and disabilities. Exercise is medicine — and our AEPs prescribe it precisely.

Exercise physiology services can be accessed through Medicare (Enhanced Primary Care plans), workers compensation, DVA, private health insurance, and NDIS funding.

Physiotherapy vs Exercise Physiology

Physiotherapy focuses on diagnosing and treating injury and pain through hands-on techniques and guided rehab. Exercise physiology focuses on using structured exercise to manage chronic conditions, improve function, and support long-term health. Many of our patients see both — our team works closely together to make sure your care is coordinated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an exercise physiologist and a personal trainer?

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a university-trained allied health professional qualified to work with people who have injuries, chronic conditions, or disabilities. A personal trainer works with healthy individuals for fitness. If you have a health condition, you need an AEP.

Is exercise physiology covered by Medicare?

Yes. With a GP referral under a Chronic Disease Management plan, you may be eligible for Medicare-subsidised exercise physiology sessions.

Can exercise physiology be funded through NDIS?

Yes. Exercise physiology is commonly funded under NDIS for capacity building, functional assessments, and improving independence.

Do you offer gym-based sessions?

Yes. All exercise physiology sessions at Flex Allied Health take place in our allied health gym, including our paediatric gym facility.
