Behaviour Support
Challenging behaviour is almost always communication. Our Behaviour Support Practitioners work with NDIS participants of all ages to understand what's driving behaviours of concern and build practical, evidence-based strategies that improve quality of life.
What is Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred, evidence-based approach to understanding and addressing behaviours that impact a person's daily life, relationships, and participation in the community. Under the NDIS, Specialist Behaviour Support is a funded service for participants whose behaviours of concern require a structured, clinical response.
Our Behaviour Support Practitioners are experienced in working with children and adults across a range of diagnoses, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, and other conditions that affect behaviour and communication.
Our Process
Initial Assessment
A thorough functional behaviour assessment involving observation, interviews with the participant, family, carers, and support workers, and review of any existing reports. We take the time to understand the whole person — not just the behaviour.
Behaviour Support Plan
We develop a detailed, person-centred Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) that outlines strategies for the participant, family, carers, and support workers. Where restrictive practices are in use, we ensure full compliance with NDIS and state-based authorisation requirements.
Implementation and Coaching
We work with families, carers, and support teams to implement strategies consistently across all environments — home, school, community, and work. Coaching and training are provided to ensure the plan is understood and applied effectively.
Review and Progress
Regular reviews to monitor outcomes, update the Behaviour Support Plan as needed, and track progress toward reducing behaviours of concern and increasing the participant's independence and participation.
Assessments and Reports
Our Behaviour Support Practitioners complete a full range of NDIS-compliant assessments and documentation, including functional behaviour assessments, Behaviour Support Plans (including restrictive practice authorisation where required), progress reports for plan reviews, and interim and comprehensive BSPs. Whether you need a standalone assessment or ongoing therapeutic support, our team has the experience to deliver thorough, well-documented clinical work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Behaviour Support Practitioner?
A Behaviour Support Practitioner is a qualified allied health professional registered with the NDIS to provide Specialist Behaviour Support. They are trained to assess behaviours of concern, develop Behaviour Support Plans, and work with participants, families, and support teams to improve quality of life.
Does my child need to be on the NDIS to access behaviour support?
Specialist Behaviour Support is an NDIS-funded service. If the participant is not yet on the NDIS, our team can discuss alternative options and help guide you through the access process if appropriate.
What is a Behaviour Support Plan?
A Behaviour Support Plan is a clinical document that outlines the function of a participant's behaviours of concern and provides strategies for support workers, family, and carers to respond consistently and effectively. If restrictive practices are included, the plan must comply with NDIS rules and state-based authorisation requirements.
Do you work with support coordinators and plan managers?
Yes. We work closely with support coordinators and plan managers to ensure referrals are smooth, service agreements are in place, and progress reports are delivered on time. Contact our team directly on (02) 8798 8987.
How is behaviour support different from psychology?
Psychology focuses on mental health diagnosis, treatment, and therapeutic support. Behaviour support focuses specifically on understanding and reducing behaviours of concern through environmental, communication, and skills-based strategies. Both often work together for participants with complex needs — and at Flex, both services are available under the one roof.
